A class that taught
students about bartering systems: what they are, how they
work on a domestic/global level, and the ethics involved with
them. Students brought items to trade worth $1-$2. They made
permanent trades with their classmates while considering the
issues they learned about the topics above. A discussion followed
that hit home the idea that bartering involves factors such
as the item's value (monetary, non-monetary), the other party's
feelings, where the item came from, and the function of the
item.
Results:
80% of the students demonstrated through successful trades
and discussion that they understood the concepts regarding
bartering systems on a more complex level.
