MENTOR VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTION

 

Successful Mentors Have the Ability to:

  • Relate well to adolescents and have a sincere desire to make a difference in a youth's life.
  • Be a positive role model.
  • Be a good listener.
  • Be a confidence builder.
  • Be nonjudgmental and respect alternative lifestyles.

 

Qualifications

  • Be willing to commit to the program for one academic year.
  • Be dependable and punctual.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Work well with school staff.
  • Complete all training sessions and application procedures.
  • Have excellent references.
  • Have no felony convictions.

 

Expectations

  • Attend all training and follow-up meetings.
  • Provide caring concern of a good, adult friend.
  • Travel to Pendleton 1-2 times each month for on-site visits.
  • Maintain weekly e-mail contact with mentee.
  • Record all visits and correspondence with mentee.
  • Notify the project coordinator if unable to meet with mentee as scheduled.
  • Consult the project coordinator if problems or concerns arise with mentee.
  • Exercise good judgment.
  • Follow guidelines and rules at Sunridge Middle School, including dress code.
  • Do not use or promote alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.
  • Be flexible.
  • Follow procedures to end relationships appropriately.
  • Participate in NAAMP evaluation.
