Catalog Description NAAMP is a collaborative school-site-based mentoring program. This program is a partnership between Eastern Oregon University (EOU), Pendleton School District 16-R, and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The program links EOU students with Native American middle and high school students in a mentoring relationship. The goals of the program are to increase Native student self-esteem and confidence, build positive social skills and communication, and encourage youth to pursue higher educational opportunities.
Learning Outcomes & Requirements:
Students will successfully interact and build positive mentoring relationships with Native American middle and high school students.
Means of Assessment: Mentors are evaluated on their active participation in all site visits, training, completion of all learning outcomes and pre- and post- assessments.
Course Objectives: Provide Native American middle and high school youth with a positive adult role model and trusted friend. Research has shown positive mentoring relationships can help students to build self-esteem, improve academic performance, and make good choices in areas of peer relaionships, use of alcohol and drugs, and juvenile-delinquent activity.
Brief Outline of Course: Mentors will visit with their mentees on average every two weeks; attend scheduled quarterly activities and other scheduled programs. Visits start October 19, 2005 and conclude June 2, 2006.
Grading Policies: Letter grades A-C will be assigned based on successful completion of all learning outcomes and course objectives. Students can elect to participate in NAAMP and audit the course. Students who miss more than two site visits with their mentee during the course of the term will be withdrawn from the program. Students who have extenuating circumstances or need special accommodation are strongly encouraged to see the NAAMP Coordinator or Student Assistant. Students seeking satisfactory outcomes for internship, practicum, and/or Cornerstones projects will be held to the same grading standards.
Text or Suggested Materials: Training Materials from the National Mentoring Program and selected articles on mentoring, cultural diversity and other areas of interest will be provided.
Statement of Academic Misconduct: Eastern Oregon University places a high value upon the integrity of its student scholars. Any student found guilty of an act of academic misconduct (including, but not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, or theft of an examination or supplies) may be subject to having his or her grade reduced in the course in question, being placed on probation or suspended from the university, or being expelled from the university -- or a combination of these. (Please see Section II of the 2002-2003 Student Handbook and Planning Calendar: Campus Citizenship (Academic), p. 32ft. Campus Citizenship (Behavior), p. 41ff).
