Starting on Friday evening, May 21, Portland instructor Carlos Rojas and partner will teach the basics of tango at The Olde Meeting House (corner of 3rd & M).  Friday's session will begin with the showing of a documentary film about tango at 8:00 p.m., followed by a tango demonstration and some preliminary instruction.  On Saturday, May 22, the instruction will run from 10:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m. with three progressive workshops starting from the very basics of Argentine tango.  Carlos reminds us that dancing the tango is just like walking.  At 8:00 p.m., the fun will continue when The Olde Meeting House will become La Grande's first "milonga" (venue for dancing tango) where you can practice your newly learned skills.

Memorial service, July 9, 2004 at 2pm

Dear Friends,

I thought that I should pass on word that Betty Josephy passed away last Thursday, March 4, in Greenwich, Connecticut. Alvin and son Alvin,
daughters Diane Josephy Peavey, Allison Josephy Wolowitz, and Katherine (Katch) Josephy were all with her.

As many of you know, Betty had suffered for years with asthma, but her zest for life and people and ideas had kept her going at a near miraculous
level. You might also know that Betty was the "director" of Josephy life in Wallowa County. Back in the 60s, she had Nez Perce children camped at her house to attend the Wallowa County Day Camp -- her own cross cultural education program. When Fishtrap began in 1988, Betty hosted a reception for everyone on Sunday afternoon -- a tradition that lasted until the last couple of years, when her health no longer allowed it. In fact, the trips across country were very tough these past few years, but she loved her Oregon, and she made it last year against all odds and predictions.

We'll remember her wonderful hospitality, her fine wit, her love for children, education, the American Indian College Fund (her choice for memorials), good writing and writers, the West, and the "Josephy place" on the east moraine of Wallowa Lake.

There will be a memorial service here in Wallowa County on Friday, July 9, at 2 PM. That's the Friday of Summer Fishtrap, an honor that the family has given us.

following the performance.

For more information on this concert or the series, please call Fishtrap at 541-426-3623 or Janis Carper at 541-426-5810. Janis - and a fledgling music

Apr 4- May1

April, our traditional Imnaha Writers Retreat month, is almost upon us. We are planning for April 4-May 1. Participants can do one to four weeks. No charge, but we do ask you to bring a little food and "suggest" a donation. The cabin is donated, but we pay utilities, buy firewood, and do a little work around the place for the very generous owners, Mike and Kathleen Driver. Our guestimate is that it costs us about $75/week per participant.

If you have been to a previous Fishtrap event, you are eligible. There is more info on the web page - http://www.fishtrap.org. Please write me an
email or brief letter and tell us when you would like to stay at the retreat and what you are working on. The week of April 18-24 is booked, but there are spaces in all other periods as of now.

For information call 541-426-3623 or fax 541-426-9075.
