Katy Barnett
I would like to empower students to make change, to have a voice, and to stand up for their rights and their fellow students rights. With all the changes happening at Eastern this year and next year we need a strong student body willing to take on challenges and drive positive change, I believe I am the person who can unite our student body to face the future.
I have always believed that Eastern is a unique university and that the unique atmosphere comes from the devotion and involvement of administrators, faculty, and students who recognize Eastern’s potential and benefits. It is very important that all campus groups work together with our past to promote our present and provide for our future. Each individual on campus has something to contribute to the university and I would like to help facilitate students’ contributions.
I would like to see ASEOU’s involvement in other student organizations on campus increased. I would also like to see ASEOU personally offering aid and information during the budget period to student fee units and campus clubs while listening to and helping solve specific concerns. Overall, I would like to see ASEOU keeping everyone at Eastern on the same page to create unity among students.
I would like to empower students. I would like to begin conversations with different student groups and organizations about how to make a difference in their specific community and on campus. Although ASEOU has always been a supportive voice of students, I would like to help all students to be independent and voice their concerns. All students should feel comfortable to speak openly about problems they see in the university and approach professors and administrators about issues, changes, and suggestions. I believe ASEOU can achieve this through continuing education and support through classes and workshops in cooperation with the new student leadership program.
I believe I would be the best candidate for President because I would be an objective facilitator that understands the importance of collaboration and communication. I have served as an ASEOU senator and in the past year as the Vice President of Campus Affairs. I have both sat on committees and chaired them, advocating for students rights while collaborating with faculty and administration to determine solutions acceptable to all constituencies. I have also been a proxy for our current Student Body President on the Oregon Student Association board, establishing relationships and understandings of a close political ally. I am well versed in budgets and conducting meetings. I am devoted to ASEOU and Eastern. I will continue to be committed to doing what I can for the university and I would be honored to be elected as ASEOU President.
