I believe that the primary concern of any University should be the well being and advancement of its students. If elected President, I would first and foremost work to turn Eastern Oregon University onto a student-centered school that makes student needs its top priority. To accomplish this, I would make the student government more receptive to the needs of students. This would allow ASEOU to be a more proactive and vocal advocate for students on this campus. Not only would ASEOU be a more visible and available resource for students, we would fight to make sure that student dollars are spent in areas that would reflect student use and interest, instead of past precedent. Though the current budget crisis we face as an Oregon University has greatly affected students and faculty, this university is far from dried up. By working on student recruitment and retention, this university can increase its fund reserves and begin re-instating and funding activities that will promote a more diverse and lively campus climate.
I have been involved with student government, as a senator and as an executive, at Eastern for a total of three years. As a result, I have become very familiar with the way this university works. As a senator for two years, I gained a greater understanding of the power of students and the importance of an engaged and aware student body. While working as the Vice President for Political Affairs during last year’s legislative session, I organized voter registration drives, lobbied at the capital on behalf of Eastern, and worked to get more funding for our university. Though my experience in ASEOU will greatly help me fulfill the necessary presidential duties, my experience as an Eastern student will make me a great candidate for president. Not only do I understand the inner workings of this university, I have am sensitive to student needs and frustrations because I know what it feels like to go to school in La Grande. My attachment to this university has instilled in me a genuine desire to make EOU a better school and improve the quality of education and life for its students. By working to connect ASEOU with students and clubs, I know that we as a campus could fulfill the ambitious goals I have for Eastern Oregon University if I am elected President
