Charles Martin
Hello and thank you for your interest in the upcoming elections. I am Charles
Martin, a junior Agricultural Business Management student, from Astoria, Oregon.
I have been involved in ASEOU for the past two and a half years. During this time
I have learned how the ASEOU Senate works, and also how to address issues on
campus effectively and efficiently. I would enjoy serving as the President to
represent students and continuously improve the campus environment. A goal of
mine is to reevaluate what ASEOU does and how we can improve what we do.
Hello and thank you for your interest in the upcoming elections. I am Charles Martin, a junior Agricultural Business Management student, from Astoria, Oregon. I am involved around campus in various capacities, such as being an OSU Ag Progam ambassador and member of the Men’s Polo Club. I came to Eastern initially for small classes and a scholarship, and have stayed because of the people, atmosphere, and outdoor recreation within the region.
As a freshman I became involved in student government as a Judicial Adjudicator. This was followed by being appointed as the Vice President for Financial Affairs within the Associated Students of Eastern Oregon University (ASEOU) for the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 years. Over the past two and a half years I have learned much about how the University functions, and the role of the student voice in this process. There have been many goals achieved along the way, and also areas that can continue to be improved upon.
I will not try to tell you that I am the best candidate for the ASEOU President. However, I do feel that I am qualified for the position based on my years of previous experience. I know how the ASEOU functions, what works well, and what can be improved upon. I consider myself a laid back and approachable person, and objectively base decisions on good facts, instead of emotional reactions, or first impressions.
If elected as Student Body President there are several areas that I would like to change within ASEOU. As a campus organization I believe ASEOU should be more proactive in collaborating with others on campus in our goal setting at the beginning of the year. To do this I would try to meet with clubs and campus groups to gain a better appreciation of individual needs. I also feel that ASEOU should be more proactive about sharing with all students what we are working on, and how to provide input if desired.
Next year is a legislative year in Oregon, and a primary goal of mine is to actively represent Eastern at the State Capitol. As a member of the Oregon Student Association, a collective body that represents the public universities across the state we can collaboratively focus on issues affecting students (such as keeping tuition low or small university funding) and provide a student voice to the lawmakers throughout the state. Thanks for reading this.
